Entry # 10

1.intercutting- The alternation between actions taking place at two distinct locations to make one composite scene. For example, cutting between two people involved in the same telephone conversation. The distinction between this and cross cutting is one of compression of time. The intercut can be used to speed up a scene and eliminate large pieces of time that would slow a story down.

2.Montage - (dynamic editing, expressive montage, conditional montage) A method of putting shots together in such a way that dissimilar materials are juxtaposed to make a statement. A shot of a man followed by a shot of a peacock, for example, declares that the man is pompous

3.MOS - Any segment of film taken without sound. (The letters MOS come from early foreign directors who wanted pictures taken "mit out sound.")

4.Pan - A shot in which a stationary camera turns horizontally, revealing new areas

5.Slow Motion - Movements on the screen appearing slower than they would in actual life. For example, a diver will seem to float to the water gently rather than fall at the speed dictated by gravity. A filmmaker achieves slow motion by running film through his camera at a speed faster than the standard 24 frames per second; subsequent projection at 24 frames per second slows down the action

6.Voice-Over - Any spoken language not seeming to come from images on the screen.

7.Low-Angle Shot - A shot taken from below a subject, creating a sense of "looking up to" whatever is photographed.

8.Jump Cut - An instantaneous cut from one action to another, at first seemingly unrelated, action. Jump cuts will usually call attention to themselves because of the abrupt change in time and/or place.

9.Background Music- Music accompanying action on the screen, but coming from no discernible source within the film

10.Crane Shot - A shot taken from a boom that can move both horizontally and vertically

It was a summer that I could never forget and right here by the lake on the last night before I head back to the city I can tell that I will never be the same.
Two months ago I was trespassing with some friends on the old farmers land on the east side of town, we didn't think much of it because that was where we go all the time to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city but what was different about this time was is that we got caught. We had two choices after the police came and got us, 1. We could pay a fine of $500 or 2. We could spend the summer in the Yukon at a camp to help troubled teens. My parents have been having money troubles ever since my brother got sick and had to be cared for full time, my mother quit her job to look after him. They told me that I needed time to get my life straight again and that I would be going to the Yukon but I knew that they just didn’t have the money to pay the fine and now where for me to go this summer because grandma now lives in a home for the elderly. My friend’s parents just paid the fine and that was it but I was headed up north by myself for 2 months!
When I arrived at the camp for troubled teen I noticed one thing right away, it was empty. I don’t mean that there was no one there but It seemed liked it, in total there were only 10 teens and it was huge, I never thought the camp was going be this empty with so much room. The bunk room I got assigned to had 6 bunks but there was only one other girl in cabin G3. My bunk mates name was Cindy, she told me that she was only there because her parents thought it would be a great experience for her and that she wasn’t really a ‘troubled teen’ but a teen with parents who didn’t like being around her, right away we became good friends.
The first month that I was there everything seemed to be going pretty normal, well as normal as a camp for troubled teens could be. We played games to boost self confidence, and to learn to trust people along with swimming, hiking, and sitting around the camp fire. At the end of first month I knew all of the other kids there and to tell you the truth, only a couple of them seemed like they needed to be here. Everybody was nice to each other and got along with the councilors, it was more like a camp for teens that did something stupid and got caught doing it.
The next month flew by, if I had to pick a summer that was the best it would be this one. Everything seemed perfect when I was here; I don’t know if it was the fresh air or being with a bunch of really fun people that made me feel this way but whatever it was I never want this feeling gone. The summer was over and I start school in three days and it is the last night here at camp and the last night with Cindy and my other new friends but it couldn’t have been a better way to end the best summer I have ever had. Normally the campers aren’t allowed to swim at night for safety reason but tonight unlike most nights, it was the last night and the northern lights were shining brightly. Everyone went for one last swim in the lake and then we all slept down at the beach under the stars for that last night together.

Your assignment for today’s blog entry is to explore London’s Globe Theatre. Take the virtual tours and allow yourself to imagine the theatre experience during Shakespeare’s time. Write a short blog entry (minimum of 250 words), describing your impression of the theatre. Do you think you would enjoy seeing a play at the Globe? Where would you like to sit? Why? What is the most interesting thing you have learned about the Globe?

I would not have enjoyed watching a play at the Globe Theatre because of the smell. I don't think there is anyway I would be able to stand the smell of the theatre with that many people down on the courtyard. My first impression of the theatre was that it seemed fairly large for the time it was built.The higher class seating looks like it had a good view of the stage. If I were to watch a play at the Globe Theatre I would of like to sit there. I found it interesting that the stage had a trap door to do stage effects. I also thought that it was interesting that the best seat in the house is above the stage. I would think that if I was paying that much to go see a play that I would actually like to be able to see the play not just having everybody be able to see me.

I experienced from the October Sky novel study was that if you continue to do what you believe in it could change your whole life. The novel study schedule seemed like it was a good amount of time. The reading was hard to keep up with but in the end I finished the book on time. I didn’t like writing the journals; I found that they didn’t help me understand the book anymore then if I didn’t write them. The group work projects where we went over chapters 10-15 wasn’t a very good experience because the group I was in over half the people had not read that far into the novel. It made it difficult for the rest of the group members to do that project and to summarize the chapters. The final science fair project was difficult. Having the website only on one computer made it hard for the rest of the group members because we had to wait to put it on or send our portion to that one computer. I enjoy doing group work but when some group members don’t help out or don’t do their part I get frustrated because I don’t think it is fair that they get a mark even when they don’t do anything.

The October sky novel study was like no other novel study I have done before. In the other novel studies that I have done, we answer a lot of question for each section of reading. I liked not having to answer question but instead reflecting in the journals. In some of the other novel studies I have done we did worksheets and used different ways to read the story. I have had people read the story to the class or I even listen to the novel on a tape once. I liked reading the book to my self because I find that when other people read it out loud I lose concentration.

Friendship

Friendship is an important quality in life. It brings joy to us and happiness. Friendship's requires ground rules, so you are on the same base with your friends. You need to understand each other, respect one and another and have certain traits, for example loyalty, forgiveness, liability and a trustworthy attire.
An excellent example of great friends are Homer Hickam's friends: In the book Ocotober Sky, Homer Hickam (Sonny), relies on his friends to aid him in his dream and experiments requiring the rockets. His friends, being loyal, at the beginning when they were being made fun of for what they were doing. His friends weren't entirely into the rockets like how Homer was, but they stuck with Homer any way.
The rockets also allowed Homer to make more and new friends, like Quenton. If Homer never had found a interest in building rockets he would have never befriended Quenton. Homers friends didn't even like Quenton, they thought he was an outcast, still they were loyal and kept with Homer.
There are reasons to be friends with some one. You could be geinuiely interested in them, or actually like them for who they are, like O'Dell, Roy Lee and Sherman. They liked Homer for who he was. There are also the wrong reasons to be friends with someone. You could use them for something they have, to be popular or cool. Homer used Quenton at first, because he knew Quenton knew lots about science, though they did become real friends. After Homer became more famous for his rockets and more succesful, more and more people thought he was cool and decided they wanted to be his friend. They were using him a bit, which is wrong. Homer had to be careful on how he chose his friends. You would not want to pick some one who is superficial and only like you for something you were or something you had and not care about who you are as a person. Friends also help create you as a person. You wouldn't want some one who you don't like. Though sometimes when it comes to people like Quenton, you had a wrong veiw of them.
People depend on friends and having that social life. They help you through hard times and complicated issues. They are always there when you need them. You must choose them wisely and not always go for the popular, obvious choices.

What do you think the impact will be of the Rocket Boys new "rocket candy" fuel be?

I think with the new rocket fuel that the boys came up with will help them reach new heights and bring them to new levels of rocketry.The experiment that Ms. Reily shows the class with the Potassium Chlorate mixed with the sugar will help them start to go to Ms.Reily for help and will get them closer to their teacher. I think that the boys will start to trust the science teacher enough that she will be able to convince them to go to the science fair with their rockets.

I think on my assignments, the mark will be slightly above the class average. I will most likely finish the book because I don't like not finishing books I start. It will be hard to finish because I already know how it ends because we watched the movie in my rocketry class in grade 8. To get more out of the novel I plan to read it and pay attention to what I am reading because I tend not to interpret when I am not interested in the literature that I am reading. I will also look up the word that I am unfamiliar with in the dictionary to get a better understanding of the context. That will help me understand the book a little more. In parts of the book that I am having difficultly understanding, I will compare it to the motion picture staring Jake Gyllenhaal, which can out in the year 1999. I will also discuss the book with some of my classmates or friends because they may understand it better than I did. I would also get another point of view from their prospective; it might give the story something I didn’t see before. I will compare the book to my own real life experiences that I have had and some topics I might know a bit about. To keep me motivated to do my assignments on time and to have them all completed is the fact that I would know my parents would be disappointed in me and my work. I am the youngest out of the children in my family; both of my two older brothers did very well in school and left some pretty big shoes to fill. Keeping up with my brothers has always been a goal that I have to do the best that I can do in my school work. Although I am not looking forward to reading this novel, I hope that it will grow on me and I will start to enjoy it.

After four months of being in English 10 – 1 I have learned to how to explore how I feel about different styles of writing, including poetry. Over this semester and studying the novel October Sky, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, I have learned how to comprehend literature. I also started responding in classes and participate in class discussions trying to think of ways of getting the most of my learning experience for me and everyone else in the class. I like the way we used technology in class and use power points for notes, I find that easier to read then when a teacher is writing them on the board because it’s hard to see around them and you can get glares off the boards, and the markers die all the time. I kept my notes and my binder all in order this so it would be easier to find what I needed and was able to manage information in a more organized manner. I have widened my vocabulary by reading and looking up words in the dictionary, that I did not know well or not at all. I found that it helped out in the way I understand people when they are talking to me or when I hear information on the television or the radio. I am still trying to learn my creative side, but it has improved over the four months because we used it in class. My presenting and oral speaking has enhanced and I have become more comfortable in myself and the way I can present to a group of people. I found that when my classmates were respectful when others were presenting, that it made it easier for the presenter. I kept on top of my work so I wouldn’t fall behind; this helped with not having as many late assignments or not handing assignments in.It was also made it easier when I didn’t miss as much school. With the support from my teachers and peers it made English 10-1 go by smoothly and I had fun doing it. Now all I have to do is study hard for my exams!
